“I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten while in my chains…”
– Philemon 1:10 –
Christian love. Reconciliation.Repentance. Forgiveness. God’sprovidence. Christian persuasion. Social inequities. These are some of the themes addressed in Paul’s little letter to Philemon. In it we see the power of the gospel to transform a relationship between a slave and his master into one of brotherly love.
We also learn how the Apostle Paul deals with the serious social challenge of slavery without forgetting about the gospel or detracting from it. Rather, he shows us how the gospel actually works to improve society as Christians live by its power and order their lives according the ways of Jesus Christ.
